On November 18th, 1956, the Lord led our Founder, Elder Clarence Peterson, along with his wife, Jessie Peterson, and a few members to open a door at 469 Ralph Avenue. The church at its inception was named Thankful Temple C.O.G.I.C. From there, the church moved to 1721 Fulton Street. As the ministry began to flourish, the need for an even larger edifice led the church to its current location at 487 Ralph Avenue.
Elder Peterson not only toiled in the spirit for his members, he also spent many hours of manual labor in the construction and up keeping of God’s house. Through his ministry, the Lord blessed countless people due to his fatherly spirit and words of wisdom.
Elder Peterson was a beacon of light and was well-loved in his neighborhood, as well as everywhere else he went. He nurtured men and women to be great preachers and evangelists. He was a rare jewel cut from a single mold. On April 12, 1992, the Trustees of Thankful Temple C.O.G.I.C. signed a new charter, changing the church name to Peterson Temple C.O.G.I.C.
In the early part of 1997, Pastor Peterson became ill. Although his health was failing, he admonished us to love one another and stay together. On Friday, October 10, 1997, the Lord saw fit to call our founder from his labor to be rewarded. We are blessed to have our Shepherd Mother Peterson still with us. We thank God every day for her wisdom and prayers.
Elder Peterson was a very wise man; he was preparing his successor from his youth. He told his then-assistant pastor, Elder Kevin Benjamin Jones, “when I am gone take the helm of the ship and lead the people.” Elder Kevin Jones, who served Elder Peterson faithfully, was officially installed the Pastor of Peterson Temple on May 3, 1998 by the late Bishop Ithiel C. Clemmons.
Pastor Jones is renowned for his ability to comprehend and articulate the Bible. He possesses great wisdom and insight from sitting at the feet of his spiritual father and mentor, the late Elder Clarence Peterson.
He is a family man, having been married to Mrs. Connie Gail Jones for over 40 years, and they were blessed with eight children.
Pastor Jones is a man of prayer and the Bible. He is a counselor, teacher, and a tremendous preacher. With the help of God, he endeavors to cultivate men, women, boys, and girls to be warriors in the army of the Lord. The Lord has called him for this Joshua Generation. His vision is to reach the lost.
Pastor Jones clearly identifies with the wounded. One of his favorite scriptures that sum up his ministry is Isaiah 61:1 — “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;”
If you look at the history of the church, of revivals, of great awakenings, it always was connected to people unifying and praying for the Lord to work in that situation. And that’s what we want to happen in our generation. The goal of a prayer ministry is not to do all the praying for the church, but to equip, enable, and encourage church members to pray continually and effectively while making prayer a part of everything they do.

It is the dream of a place where the hurting, the depressed, the frustrated, and the confused can find love, acceptance, help, forgiveness, guidance, and encouragement.
It is the dream of sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with the hundreds of thousands of residents in our community.
It is the dream of welcoming members into the fellowship of our church family – loving, learning, laughing, and living in harmony together.
It is the dream of empowering the youth from the cradle until adulthood, nurturing them in the Word, and preparing them for higher goals in life.
It is the dream of developing people to spiritual maturity through Bible studies, small groups, seminars, retreats, and ultimately Bible school for our members.
It is the dream of equipping every believer for a significant ministry by helping them discover the gifts and talents God gave them.
It is the dream of sending out hundreds of career missionaries and church workers all around the world and empowering every member for a personal life mission in the world. It is the dream of sending our members on short-term mission projects everywhere.
It is the dream which will build a church for God—with beautiful yet simple facilities, including a worship center that seats thousands, a counseling and prayer center, classrooms for Bible studies and training lay ministers, and a recreation area. All of this will be designed to minister to the total person spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially—set in a peaceful, inspiring garden landscape.
We state in confident assurance that these dreams will become a reality. Why? Because they are inspired by God.
The PTM exists to reach people for Jesus Christ and membership into the family of God, develop them to Christ-like maturity, and equip them for ministry in the church and life mission in the world in order to magnify God.
At Peterson Temple Ministries, we use five key words to summarize Christ’s five purposes for His Church.
